Have you wondered whether you needed to file a tax return or not?
Tax returns have to be filed if you made the following:
- Single $8,950
- Married filing jointly $17,900
- Head of Household $11,500
- Married filing seperately $3,500
- Self employed $400
You might consider filing even if you don’t have the minimum income if:
- You paid in federal income tax. You might get some or all of it back.
- You didn’t qualify or receive the maximum allowed of the recovery rebate during 2008.
- You might qualify for the Earned Income Credit.
- You could get an additional child credit if you have at least one qualifying child.
- You might receive the first time homebuyer credit if you purchased your first home.

What about a college-age child who made $3500 last summer and is claimed by her Father (who pays her college tuition)? Hypothetical question, of course!

Great questions!
Students who have some income from tehir jobs should consider filing to allow them to get their withheld taxes back. If somone else claims you as a dependent you can not get the excemption again on your own taxes. Regardless, you will probably be able to get your withheld taxes back from the Federal and State governments.
